--Pink Floyd, "Learning to Fly"

Name: Lord Destrias Kanan
Title: Knight of the Crown, Dragonrider of the Gold Wing
Race: Qualinesti/Kagonesti elf, one-eighth silver dragon.

Birthplace: Khalkist Mountains, Krynn
Age: 97 (Human equivalent 19)
Occupation: Knight, dragonrider, healer

Physical description: Because of his time spent with Relansa's mother and stepfather as a child and the plentiful supply of food he had, Destrias is taller and more robust than his twin at 5'8, 140 lbs. He has long auburn hair, strong angular wilder elf features, and strangely metallic golden eyes that hint of his silver dragon ancestry. He most often wears his standard of the Knights of the Crown over elven chainmail, dark blue pants, and black boots, his elven longsword with the symbols of Kiri-Jolith and Paladine on the hilt at his side. When expecting trouble one can expect to see him in his full mithral plate armor, an elaborate bit of combative art presented to him by his cousin, Porthios, and enough to make even those Solamnic knights graced with heritage armor feel tarnished.

Personality: Destrias is much quieter than his older twin and mature beyond his years, making him seem to be the oldest of the three Kanan brothers much of the time. He is full of self-criticism and insecure about his place in the family, often going to great lengths to try to prove himself to his brothers. He is almost cripplingly shy and is quite comfortable fading into the background, but will move quickly to defend those who are threatened by evil. He lives by a strict code of honor as do all Knights of the Crown, and his loyalties to justice and good run deep, as do his loyalties to family and friends. Having lost his mother at birth, beloved human adoptive father while he was still a child, and been seperated from his twin for much of his early life, he is somewhat afraid to trust that love will last and that he will not be left alone.

Abilities: Destrias has wanted to be a knight since he was a young child and has trained hard to become the able defender of justice that he is. He is excellent in longsword and two-handed sword fighting, and is passable in all other forms of knightly combat, always training to become even better and advance to Knight of the Rose, the highest order of Solamnic knights. He is able to wield and use a dragonlance with great skill and his holy knight abilities are boosted by the magic of his gold dragon partner, Aurelia. He has a natural gift of uncanny aim with throwing knives, a source of competitive fire to his thief-trained twin. He worked as a fisherman for a good part of his life and has all the skills required for a life spent near and on the ocean. He is a first rate swimmer. He has studied healing arts from a young age, and also is able to use the powerful healing gift of his dragon blood to regeneratively heal himself and others. He is a talented artist, but is reluctant to show his work to anyone, thinking it to be amateur even though his drawings are so detailed they almost seem ready to spring to life.

Items: Holy longsword (+5, additional damage against evil), mithral platemail armor, mithral chain armor, mithral shield, fire dagger (+2, becomes fireball when thrown), firebane cloak (protection from flame, invisible to normal and infrared vision), ring of cool breezes (protection from heat).

Family: Miralas (half brother), Estreael (twin brother), Relansa (half-sister), Gilthanas (cousin)

Theme Songs: Learning to Fly, Pink Floyd / Dreams, Van Halen

Actor: Derek Brewer, one, because he's a twin and so Keith can be Estreael, and two because of those oh, so intense eyes of his.

Destrias and his twin were conceived as a result of a rape by their father, insane elven prince Arelas, on a wilder elf servant in his household. The girl escaped a few months later, struggling to find her way back to the forests she was born in. Near to giving birth and caught by storms in the dangerous Khalkist mountains, she was captured by a mated pair of red dragons. Seeing that she carried twins, the dragons devised an evil scheme, ripping the babes from her body and capturing their souls into crystals in order to provide helpless slaves for their twin hatchlings Myrlich and Krychys. The younger twin was named Destrias, or baby bat, then given to Krychys and separated from his brother Estreael.

With his soul trapped in the crystal and subject to instantaneous and cruel punishment, Destry was a compliant slave to the dragon, who became a scholar as he grew older. Krychys demanded absolute silence from the tiny elven boy, forcing a spell upon him that would cause instant soulstrike should he utter the smallest sound. The only comfort afforded the boy was the yearly visit to his master's twin's lair, when he was able to see, although not talk with, Estreael, their only form of communication a hand sign they devised to say "I love you." By bizarre circumstances, Miralas, the elder half-brother of the twins, travelled back in time, having met the twins as they were in a seperte timeline having spent their entire lives under the dragons, irreperably crushed in spirit. With the grace of the gods he was able to free the twins and destroy their persecutors. The twins were then turned over to the care of their siblings in their timeline, Estreael going to the young Miralas, living on the streets of Garnet, and Destry taken to Miralas' sister Relansa, living with her mother, stepfather, and half-sister in a human fishing village on Southern Ergoth. None of the children knew of their true relationships. To free their souls from the crystals, they were sent through the souls of their guardian siblings, forever forging a deep soul-bond.

In spite of his new home with caring family, the traumitized boy was still broken in spirit. Over the years the young Relansa's love for her 'adopted' brother, along with the paternal love given him by her step-father, was able to break through his fear enough for him to speak, although it never broke through his natural shyness. Withdrawn and introspective, Destry learned to express himself through his drawings and to find friendship in precious books his new family struggled to provide for him, dreaming of someday being able to heal pain and protect those who were oppressed. When Relansa went to study magic, Destry followed, and later accompanied her to the Tower of the Suns when Relansa was discovered by the House Royal to be the daughter of Arelas and therefore a princess. Because of his wilder elf blood, Destrias was forced to act as Relansa's servant rather than her adopted brother, but he was content so long as he was near her, the two comforting each other through the separation from their family back home in Ergoth. While in the Tower they learned of the death of their human father. It came as a crushing blow to Destrias, who had adored the man who had been the only father he'd ever known.

As Relansa became more knowledgable in magic, she began to wonder about the fate of the older brother her mother had told her about, and so cast a spell that would reveal blood kinship. To her surprise, not only did she learn that her older brother was alive and in Solamnia, but that Destrias and the twin he occassionally whispered about were her younger half-brothers by Arelas. She and Destrias set off on a perilous journey to find their brothers and bring them back to the Tower of the Suns, travelling to Garnet where both Miralas and Estreael were living on the rough streets of the dwarven city. With all four of Arelas' children reunited, life in the elven court became slightly more bearable.

As the twins grew and their features began to show their bloodline, their cousin Porthios, Speaker of the Suns, realized that these two servants were in fact members of his family and the illegitimate sons of his uncle. The Speaker chose to overcome the risk of court scandal by acknowledging them and giving them the protection of House Royal, in spite of past cruelty on his part towards them. Destrias was quick to forgive Porthios, and the Speaker learned to respect the quiet and wise youth. Impressed by the intellect and fighting powess of the boy, Porthios recommended his admission to the Solamnic knights. Destrias soon proved his worth to the knights, spending less than a year as a squire before being admitted to their ranks as a full knight.

Chancing to meet a rare gold dragon in his journeys, Destrias revealed to her the secret of his silver dragon bloodline. The gold, Aurelia, found in him the purity and strength that convinced her to take up a rider for the first time since the dragonwars. The two became a powerful pair, able to defeat larger foes through intellect and strategy, and forged a deep trust and kinship with each other that began to draw the youg knight from his shell of shyness and give him the confidence he needed to represent both the Solamnic knighthood and House Royal of Qualinost.

Destrias is my serious character, he does serious things, yet it is his shyness and his self-doubt that appeals to me. He and Estrie are twins, yet their separate life experiences cause them to react to things in such different ways. Destry attempts to overcome the victimization of his childhood by protecting others, but he crumbles if he is made to feel helpless, just as he was helpless to protect himself from the dragons as a child.
